Musica Sacra begins its 50th anniversary season with three works marking the occasion with a look to our past, to our future, and a glorious celebration of the moment at hand. We are honored to be joined by The Boston Cecilia for this festive event.
We begin our season with one of the landmark works of the choral literature: Johannes Brahms's German Requiem (Ein deutsches Requiem). In this deeply personal work Brahms set texts chosen from the Bible to reflect on the deaths of two people of paramount importance in his life: his great friend Robert Schumann and his own mother. Ms. Beekman opens the concert with two choral works reflecting the past and future of the great tradition of choral music. One of them, Selig sind die Toten by Heinrich Schütz, a composer whom Brahms admired and emulated, was published in 1648; the other, a contemporary work, Sleep, was composed recently by Eric Whitacre, an exciting composer giving new voice to the choral medium.
