Auditions

We are looking for a few good singers!

Musica Sacra is currently seeking experienced first sopranos, low altos, tenors, and basses for our 2023-2024 Season.

We conduct auditions as a two-part process. Initial auditions will be held by appointment either over Zoom or in-person on a rolling basis. The initial audition is followed by an in-person audition at one of our rehearsals. If you would like to arrange an initial audition time, please fill out and submit our Audition Form. You are not required to prepare a piece for the audition, but you will be asked to demonstrate your sight reading skills.

About Musica Sacra

Musica Sacra has sung in Cambridge and Boston over 60 years, over 40 of them under the direction of conductor Mary Beekman, who is known in the Boston area for her inspired programming. We sing a diverse selection of both sacred and secular music, ranging from the 15th-century Flemish to the newly-composed, with everything in between suited to our size of 28-32 singers. We work to adapt our sound to the spirit of each piece being sung and are looking for singers who are able to do the same.

The music Mary selects can be challenging; the group often sings a cappella works with adventurous voicings and harmonies, and it always presents compositions in their original language. We perform in mixed formation, and occasionally numerous divisi require a singer to be alone or with one other on a part. The result is a sound that is distinctively transparent (called “jaw-droppingly good” in the Boston Musical Intelligencer), with programs that are extremely rewarding for our singers and audiences alike!

Our program schedule

We perform four concerts per year, nearly all of which are performed at First Church Congregational near Harvard Square. (Occasionally we may arrange for a performance in a larger venue, particularly if we are collaborating with an orchestra and/or another chorus.) This year, our concerts are scheduled for:

  • October 21, 2023
  • December 9, 2023
  • March 9, 2024
  • May 11, 2024

Rehearsals

Rehearsals are Wednesdays from 7:00 - 10:00 PM in the sanctuary of Harvard-Epworth Church in Cambridge (also near Harvard Square).

A word on Covid-19

At this time, all chorus members are required to be vaccinated and boosted, and masks are encouraged but not required during rehearsals. Singers may choose to sing socially distanced or not during rehearsal depending on their own comfort levels. Masks are currently worn during performances. These policies will be evaluated prior to the beginning of the 2023-2024 season. If you have any questions regarding Musica Sacra’s Covid-19 safety protocols, please reach out at info@musicasacra.org.
